  1. "Who's my daddy ?"

The flag is SYMBOL OF RACISM BUT WAS BEVER MEANT TO BE THAT, IT HAS COME TO THAT BECAUSE RACIST PEOPLE ADOPTED THE FLAG AS THEIR OWN, I KNOW SOME BLACK PEOPLE WHO HAVE THAT FLAG IN THEIR HOMES FOR THE RIGHT REASONS.

Not all people fly the confederate flag because they are racist. It is actually a symbol of defiance nowadays. I have one on my wall along with several other flags. peace

  3. Hey,
well im from the south and I see it (confederate flags) all the time too… alot of people think its considered racist… when i was in hgh school my cousin asked a girl who was drawing a picture of the flag what did the flag mean to her and she said it was just southern pride to her and that she was not racist. I think it means a little more that that, and they just aren’t telling you. If you’ve seen those KKK fliers then yes I would say your town is definitely racist. Why would anyone want to hang KK fliers around, they are all about white supremacy

  4. No, to me, it has nothing to do with racism but to some it does so it has evolved into that argument.

A Malcom X “X” on a hat probably has just as much meaning to most blacks that a Confederate flag does to most whites. Big deal.

Now a KKK flyer? Pack the U-Haul….

the idea is that it stands for states rights but what was one of those rights that the southern states wanted but the northern states wanted to do away with it….slavery. and the kkk shows more respect to it than they ever do the american flag. in fact i’ve heard some even refuse to hang the american flag.
so yes it does but some people have taken it to just be a symbol of “southern pride”. on rapper lil jon’s first CD he was on the cover with a confederate flag draped over his shoulders and the picture on the CD itself was a confederate flag.

Here lately, there have been many post on this topic. So here goes….I am from Georgia. In the South, we do not look at the Confederate flag as a racial thing…it is heritage of the South. It is not about slavery either. The Civil War had African Americans fighting on both sides and both sides had slaves! Hate groups such as the KKK have chosen to use the Confederate flag and give it a bad reputation with Northerners. The Nazis did the same thing with a cross…turned something good into a hate symbol. Many white and blacks in the south wear/wave/display the Confederate flag! It is not something the South should be ashamed of!

  7. I am a Texan, but I have lived in the North Country of New York and Vermont for about five years now. The answer to this question, in my experience, is a little murky. Many people who fly the “Confederate Flag” are indeed racist. The flag to which you are referring and which most people call that is not really the flag of the Confederate States of America; it is a battle flag and should only be flown in times of war. That being said, most folks who fly that flag do not understand this. Unfortunately, most of these people are uneducated “rednecks” and use the flag as a symbol of pride in this fact. Even here in the North, “rednecks” fly this flag from their trucks and wear it on T-shirts. I always think of it as Jews flying the German Nazi flag; my people flew the “Confederate” flag while they were killing “Yankees” by the thousands. The Civil War had to do with Southern cultural pride, states’ rights, and, yes, slavery. A person’s understanding of the Civil War effects their use of this flag. My father-in-law has this flag on his fridge, but he is German-born and lived in the Northern States most of his life. His best friend used to be a black Cuban named Sancho. He uses the flag as a symbol of his love for Southern culture and states’ rights (in Germany, the Bundesländer, or states, have much more power than American states). But again, in Virginia, I’d steer clear of any neighborhood where folks use the “Confederate” flag freely. It would be like a white person walking through Harlem or most of the neighborhoods in DC; many of the people in the neighborhood may not care what color you are, but when you find too many white people together mixed with free use of that flag, just be wary!

I suppose what it comes down to is just to approach these people with caution. Teach your kids about the Civil War and American history, so that they can see the multiple meanings of the “Confederate” flag and why some people use it nefariously. The same can be said of the Christian cross at different points in time, some people used it as a tool of hate, others of love. The “swastika” used by the Nazis was previously a religious symbol of luck for the Hindus. It’s getting harder and harder to judge a book by its cover.

  9. It’s actually inappropriate to fly the southern flag because
it really means nothing after the war was over just as
the Swastika after Germany was defeated> Flying a
Swastika by most people is considered to be an insult
and disrespect to humanity concerning the Holocaust!
Unfortunately white Americans can’t convey that same
respect to their fellow black Americans whom have also
endured the Holocaust of slavery and discrimination!
As for the person who mentioned Malcolm X, Malcolm
X isn’t a country of National figure, and we don’t wave
a Malcolm X flag in public places. Malcolm X was a
racist at one time but did change his heart in his
latter years which has nothing to do with what you
are talking about! Racist always seem to try to find a
way to justify wrong doing, I’m not sure if it’s due to
deliberate evil or low level of intellect!

  10. Not necessarily … think of it as more of a ‘Southern pride’ thing

…. after all, why should the federal level have the power to overturn each and every state law? The E U does not do this.

  11. Well The Confederate flag doesn’t necassarily mean they’re racist it could mean 1 of 2 things

1.They are proud of what they came from meaning the Civl war and the south (Blacks fly the flag to even though that would be degrading because they lost)
    2. They’re racist
But just incase I would avoid them also the KKK flyers are a sure sign to get the hell out of Roanoke
